Flight Path

cnv000155002.jpg

Shot last week when the weather was a bit better, this billboard is in Aldgate, London. I guess it’s no coincidence that it was placed right below a flight path — you can just see the plane top left of the poster.

Click on the thumbnails below for different versions of the same billboard (but without the plane)…

Airshow Washout

60715002.jpg

The Southend Airshow has been held every Spring Bank Holiday weekend for 22 years now. Sometimes the weather is glorious, sometimes cloudy, but this year’s was probably the worst ever. It rained almost continually for the whole two days, but still didn’t stop this family of four from enjoying the show. This is the only shot I took this year.

Caution Do Not Enter

cnv000935002.jpg

This is on the beach at Alum Bay, Isle of Wight. It’s there to stop people climbing on the dangerous cliffs that give the area its famous coloured sand. The original shot was a little flat so I have bumped up the colours a bit in Photoshop.

Talking Telescope

cnv000915002.jpg

There was me hoping to get some nice shots of the Needles on a day trip to the Isle of Wight… unfortunately visibility that day was very poor so I had to find something else to photograph. This is the ‘Talking Telescope’ viewpoint at Alum Bay — on a nice day you can get a good view of the Needles from it.

More trees from last week in the New Forest. If I had a ND grad filter I guess I could have made it darker across the top.

Tree 237

cnv000175003.jpg

These markings were spray-painted onto a felled tree in the New Forest. There were several others alongside it so I guess it means they are diseased trees marked out by the Forestry Commission?

A Walk In The New Forest

cnv000365003.jpg

All this week I will posting my shots from the New Forest last week. All are shot on film due to the problem with my digital camera.

In this first shot, look carefully at the bottom of the frame and you can see the lone figure walking in the forest. This was shot near Ashurst.

Men At Work

And this is the final, and my favourite, of the three picture style experiments. I particularly love the colours in the brickwork. High contrast and high saturation set on the camera’s user-defined picture function.

Green Door

And now, a couple more examples of my experiment with the user-defined picture style (see yesterday’s post for details). The colours are much stronger than they would have been on the standard setting, and I really like the light across the door.

Saturated Sky

59225003.jpg

A friend of mine (thanks, Chris) suggested experimenting with the 400D’s picture style menu. So I tried increasing the contrast and saturation in one of the user-defined picture styles and am quite pleased with the results. I’ll certainly be using it in the future as I prefer the brighter colours.

R. I. P.

Next up, a couple of slightly morbid ones I’m afraid; both from the graveyard pictured in yesterday’s post. This is an extreme close up of detail on one of the gravestones; I like the depth of field on it.

An Essex Church

5742505.jpg

I pass this church on my train commute to work every day, and I thought it would be a good place to take some shots. It’s St Margaret’s of Antioch in Bowers Gifford, Essex, and was taken near dusk a couple of Sundays ago.

My Poor Camera

Well I am now back from my little break in the New Forest; the bad news is that on the second day of my holiday my 400D decided to die on me. But the good news is that I had my trusty old film camera with me as backup, so was at least able to take a few shots. The main drawback was that I had to be a lot more selective with my shots as getting them processed and printed is very expensive these days; and obviously I couldn’t check images as I went along. On the plus side I do think film gives better colour than digital.

Anyway, this week I am going to post some images I took the week before my trip. That will give me time to sort my New Forest pictures and I’ll post them next week.

In the meantime, Canon please hurry up and fix my 400D!

Queenstown Luge

36022100015003.jpg

This is the last of my New Zealand series for now. It shows one of the cars of the Skyline Gondola on its way up the hill overlooking Queenstown. In the background you can see people speeding back down The Luge in go-karts. I waited ages to get the gondola and go-karts in the right position, and although this shot would have been better if I had got it a split second earlier, it’s the best of several shots. I was using a film camera so couldn’t check it at the time.

Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown

This shot shows Lake Wakatipu from Queenstown, New Zealand. I had thought that the mountains in the background were the Remarkables, but looking at a map I now think that they are the Eyre Mountains. Let me know if you can identify them!

Helicopter Over Mount Cook #2

After our helicopter had landed near the top of the Mount Cook range, I took this shot of another helicopter passing overhead. It’s a little harder to spot with the image reproduced at this small size, though.
